When Exterior Waterproofing Makes Sense

  • Severe or repeated water entry through foundation walls.
  • Accessible exterior walls where excavation is possible.
  • Basements with finished interiors where interior work is limited.
  • Ongoing issues at the same wall even after interior repairs.
  • Properties where long-term exterior protection is a priority.

What’s Involved in Exterior Waterproofing

Excavating down to the footing along the affected wall. This allows us to access the full vertical span of the foundation to identify cracks and structural issues.

Cleaning and preparing the foundation wall. We remove old debris and loose concrete to ensure a smooth, stable surface for the new waterproofing layers.

Applying membranes or coatings and adding drainage materials. This creates a multi-layered barrier that prevents water from contacting the concrete and diverts it away.

Backfilling and restoring the area as conditions allow. We carefully replace the soil and ensure appropriate grading to prevent future water pooling against the house.

Interior vs. Exterior Considerations

In many cases, both interior and exterior options are possible. Seal Pros explains the pros and cons of each approach—such as interior accessibility versus exterior excavation—so clients can choose the solution that best fits their property layout and budget.
